When does marketing communication go out-of-date?

Well if the marketing communications are related to urgent matters, they can have a pretty short shelf life. A 147 year old American Civil War message was just extracted from a bottle and deciphered for the first time – a wee bit too late. Not that the message to General Pemberton, “You can expect no help from this side of the river”, would have helped him much in his attempt to defend Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Effective communication is all about timeliness. It’s about crafting the marketing campaign at the right time to match the potential customer’s needs with your offerings. It’s about sending the message in a timely fashion and making sure it’s received. You need to get the right message to the right target audience at the right time.

Otherwise, you may as well surrender.

It’s curious that the glass vial sat unopened in The Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond for 104 years. I’m sure most Ottawa communicators hope that their mails at least get opened by their recipients.

Just a thought.
